Drop-In Discovery on Shell Jewelry Making
April 15, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Discover the process of making shell jewelry with native artist Rykelle Kemp. Rykelle will explain how she makes shell with silver earrings, and the meaning behind the various indigenous symbols on them. See how she uses a jewelers saw, hammer, steel block and a process called “cold connections” to attached sterling silver to the shell. Listen to the stories of what some of the symbols and designs mean in her different native tribes. One that may be taboo to some is the whirling log, which looks like the swastika. The symbol is being reclaimed by many tribes because of the meaning and importance behind it.
